Halet Çambel Mansion
besiktas istanbul / Türkiye (2021-2023)
The Halet Çambel Mansion is a rare surviving example of late Ottoman residential architecture, its elegant timber-framed facades and ornate interior woodwork speaking to a sophisticated domestic culture that flourished in the late nineteenth century. Transforming this historic building into a cultural venue and memorial space required a lighting design that respected the original fabric while meeting the practical demands of a contemporary public institution.
Interior spaces presented a particular challenge: the original rooms feature delicate painted ceilings, gilded cornices, and inlaid wooden floors that are highly sensitive to both heat and ultraviolet radiation. We specified a bespoke suite of low-heat LED sources with UV-filtering optics, concealed within purpose-made brackets that complement rather than compete with the existing decorative scheme. Warm 2700K colour temperatures were selected to harmonise with the amber and ivory palette of the historic interiors.
The garden and courtyard spaces were treated as an outdoor extension of the exhibition, with path lighting integrated into the historic paving and subtle uplighting animating the mature trees and fountain structures. The lighting programme changes with the seasons and is capable of supporting evening cultural events, creating a versatile and atmospheric outdoor venue that honours the spirit of this exceptional heritage property.
